Why do we like to put weight overhead (“The Press”) versus laying down on bench?  Here are just a few reasons:

Effective and Efficient- The body must work in unison as complete unit.  You press from the ground and therefore the entire body must maintain tension to get the load overhead.  Upper and lower back along with your abs work to stabilize, while triceps, upper chest and shoulder move the weight up.  We want train movements that get us the biggest bang for the buck.

Healthy Shoulders – The Press works all shoulder heads equally.  Both front and back stabilizing muscles must be utilized.

Functional – When in a real life situation do you lie on your back and press something off of  your chest?

Fun – It feels good to put heavy stuff over your head!
